One of the more popular fantasy characters of 20th Century literature is Conan, created in the pages of WEIRD TALES by Robert E. Howard. There have been two films about this synthetic legend and we will be showing them together at the next Leeperhouse film festival, June 19, at 7 PM. FLASH GORDON CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE (1940) chap. 5 CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982) dir. by John Milius CONAN THE DESTROYER (1984) dir. by Robert Stevenson In spite of starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, who seems to grow into the role, these are fairly good adaptations of the pulp magazine hero. Most of the critics seemed to prefer the second film. I think that its style is a bit light. The first is a film of blood, fire, and iron; the second is more like a Sinbad film. The real star of the films is a magnificent score by Basil Polidoris. Also the first film has a magnificent performance by James Earl Jones as Thulsa Doom. 2. Since work schedules are even more confused then usual, due to the strike, it is advised that you contact either Mark or myself the day of the festival to verify it (the festival, that is) is still on. (I don't forsee any problems, but you never know....) (Our work phone numbers are above; our home number is (201) 566-2965.)
