In conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, the Science Fiction Club in Middletown will be discussing Latin American fantasy authors at noon on Wednesday, September 14. While Jorge Luis Borges is perhaps the best known, other fantasists of note include Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Moacyr Scliar. Unlike the British and American fantasy tradition, largely rooted in Celtic origins and often completely distinct from the world of reality, the Latin American tradition is more derived from the surrealists of Mediterranean Europe and looks at a world just a few degrees off from ours. (Talk about wild generalizations!) Come tell me how THE MT VOID Page 2 off-base I am. [-ecl] 2. Newton Lee has asked us to run the following announcement: Proposal for the Formation of Bell Labs "Star Trek & the 20th Century" Club The objective of the Bell Labs Star Trek & the 20th Century Club is to investigate the philosophy, psychology, politics, and scientific technology in Star Trek so as to explore their relationship with our present world. Bi-weekly meetings will be held to discuss current affairs confronting humanities in light of the problems and solutions presented in the Star Trek episodes (The Original Series, The Next Generation, and the movies). Recently aired or video-taped episodes will be selected for discussion and an agenda will be distributed a week prior to each meeting. Topics of discussion will include "Balance of Power through Armament or Disarmament?" (based on Star Trek's "A Private Little War"), "How to Deal with Inner Personal Conflicts" (based on Star Trek's "The Enemy Within"), "Is Beauty Logical or Emotional? Relative or Absolute?" (based on Star Trek's "Is There No Truth in Beauty?"), and "Research and Applications of Artificial Intelligence at AT&T" (based on Star Trek's "The Ultimate Computer"). THE MT VOID Page 3 The Club will also encourage exchange of Star Trek related souvenirs, invite special speakers, organize trips to Star Trek conventions, and possibly create a Star Trek VI filming script for submission to Paramount Pictures. In order to establish the Star Trek Club, I need at least 10 Bell Labs employees to second the proposal. If you are interested in joining the Star Trek Club, please send me e- mail stating your name, location, phone number, payroll account number or social security number, and any ideas or modifications that you may want to contribute to the proposed Club charter. Thank you very much for your attention. Newton Lee LZ 3E-315, mtund!newton, 201-576-3541 Mark Leeper MT 3E-433 957-5619 ...mtgzz!leeper THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT ALMOST BLANK
